Ellec Armstead, a 2020 Waukon High School graduate and current senior at the University of Dubuque, was awarded the Sergeant Jeffrey B. Dodge Scholarship during Homecoming Weekend at the University of Dubuque, held the first weekend in October. The scholarship is named in honor of U.S. Army Sergeant Jeffrey Dodge, who was a 1968 graduate of the University of Dubuque and went on to serve in the Vietnam War, being killed in action two days before he was scheduled to return to the United States.

The Sergeant Jeffrey B. Dodge Veterans Center on the University of Dubuque campus is also named after Sgt. Dodge. As a member of the Iowa Army National Guard and the University of Dubuque Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) program, Armstead has contributed a great deal of time to that Center during her academic career at the University of Dubuque.

The scholarship is awarded to a student who exemplifies the characteristics of leadership, commitment, honor and promise. In addition to her involvement with the National Guard and ROTC, Armstead is the Vice President of ProUD, a member of Valor - which is a ministry group within ROTC, and a member of TRIO. She also runs cross country and track for the Lady Spartans and participates in some intramural sports on campus. In fact, she could not be in attendance at the scholarship presentation because she was competing for the University of Dubuque in the NCAA DIII Pre-Nationals Meet in Terre Haute, IN.

Armstead will graduate in May of 2025 with an Exercise Science major and a minor in Aviation Management and Military Science. She will commission as a Second Lieutenant in the United States Army that same day.
