New Winter Parking Ordinance going into effect for downtown Waukon ...

The Waukon City Council passed a new Winter Parking Ordinance at its November 18 meeting in an effort to better facilitate snow removal in the downtown Waukon area. The new ordinance is scheduled to go into effect from November 15 through April 1 each year, and will become effective immediately as of the publication of the ordinance in this week’s edition of The Standard (see Page 10).

The ordinance states that there will be no parking from 2 a.m. to 6 a.m. on any street within the downtown business district area, which is outlined in red in the accompanying submitted map image at right. For this purpose, the downtown business district is defined as lying within the intersection of 2nd Street NE and 2nd Avenue NE traveling west on 2nd Avenue NE to the intersection of 2nd Avenue NW and 2nd Street NW, then traveling south to the intersection of 2nd Street SW and 2nd Avenue SW, then traveling east along 2nd Avenue SW to 2nd Avenue SE, traveling north through 2nd Street SE continuing back to the beginning intersection.

Residential properties within this outlined district and throughout the city are not subject to these requirements but are subject to the following further parking restrictions:
No person shall park, abandon, or leave unattended any vehicle on a public street, alley, or off-street parking area during a snow emergency as proclaimed by the mayor, unless snow has been removed or plowed, and snowfall has ceased. A snow emergency will be in effect when the accumulation of snow is forecasted to exceed three inches in Waukon, as predicted by the National Weather Service. The snow emergency will continue for 24 hours after cessation of such storm unless streets are reopened sooner. Vehicles in violation will be cited and/or towed.

Notification to citizens of a snow emergency will be broadcast on local radio stations and posted on the Waukon Police Department social media sites. The full ordinance is also posted on the Waukon Police Department website at the following link: https://www.waukonpolice.com/city-ordinances.
