Virginia Marzen

Virginia M. Marzen, 89, of rural New Albin died peacefully surrounded by her husband, daughters, sons-in-law, and grandchildren Friday, November 29, 2024, at her daughter’s home in Buchanan, ND. Funeral services will be held Saturday, December 14 at 11 a.m. at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in New Albin with Fr. Joseph Sevcik officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

Friends may greet the family from 4-7 p.m. Friday, December 13 at the New Albin Community Center, where there will be a 7 p.m. scripture service. Thornburg-Grau Funeral Home in Lansing is handling arrangements.

Virginia Mary Marzen was born April 9, 1935, in rural New Albin, the daughter of Irvin G. and Claudia (Donovan) Meyer. Virginia was a graduate of New Albin High School. She then graduated as a Registered Nurse at St. Francis School of Nursing in La Crosse, WI. Virginia worked as a nurse in La Crosse until she retired in 2009.

October 15, 1960, Virginia married Max G. Marzen at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in New Albin. They made their home, raised their family, and farmed outside New Albin until 2021. They then resided in their daughters’ homes in Minnesota, Texas, and North Dakota.

Virginia was a dedicated wife and mother to her four daughters. She was a faithful St. Joseph’s Catholic Church member, serving in several leadership roles. Virginia enjoyed cooking, crocheting, gardening, and watching sports. She was an avid Iowa Hawkeye fan. Virginia loved to entertain family and friends around her big kitchen table and her large holiday meals were anticipated by many. She also enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren.

Surviving in addition to her husband, Max Marzen, are her daughters: Colleen Phillips and her husband, Chuck, of Columbus, OH; Marianne Klosterman and her husband, Paul, of Buchanan, ND; Janice Courneya and her husband, Doug, of Rochester, MN; and Jean Marzen of Willow Park, TX. Also surviving are eight grandchildren: Matthew Phillips, Mitchell Phillips, Ashley Courneya, Eric Courneya, Evan Bradley, William Klosterman, Ginna Klosterman, and Celia Klosterman; one great-grandchild: Athena Phillips; one sister: Karen Adams of La Crosse, WI; and many nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents; an infant son, Ralph Marzen; and a brother, Ralph Meyer.

Virginia touched many people as a loving wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, sister, and nurse.  She will be greatly missed by everyone who knew and loved her.
