Holidays can be a fun and exciting time of the year, yet can also be stressful at the same time. The key to having a healthy and happy holiday is to find a good balance. See some of the following tips below:
• Try making a to-do list and prioritize the things that need to be done first. If your list is too long, don’t be afraid to delegate some tasks to someone else. For example, instead of making the entire meal, just make the entrée and have everyone else bring the rest.
• Continue to stay active as much as you can, as exercise helps reduce stress levels. If you have time for exercise before or after an event, great, but if not, don’t sweat it, there is always tomorrow. Or perhaps you can get a few family members to join you for a walk after dinner or go downtown shopping, which will make it even more enjoyable. Any physical activity, or steps you get, are beneficial!
• Make time for yourself to de-stress, even if it’s only five minutes. Go for a quick walk, sit down with a cup of coffee or hot tea, listen to some music, jot down your thoughts, meditate, do some deep breathing, or just sit in silence and take in your surroundings.
• Continue to eat a balanced diet as much as possible, with lots of fruits, veggies, and whole grains. Want to have a treat? Don’t deprive yourself. If you do, you’re more apt to overindulge. Remember “everything in moderation.”
• Start your day out on the right foot and be positive. Being negative only has lingering effects.
• If you find yourself really struggling this holiday season, don’t be afraid to reach out for help. Try calling a family member or friend and let them know how you are feeling. It just might help to get it off your chest. Also try not to be alone. Surrounding yourself with people you love, or who love you, may be just what the doctor ordered.
