The Waukon girls basketball team faced a formidable task in seeking to continue its season, traveling to the home of a Forest City team that had just a single loss on the season and a number-four ranking among the Class 3A elite Wednesday, February 19 for a Class 3A Region 3 semifinals match-up against another squad of Indians. For three and a half quarters, Waukon’s Tribe paid little heed to the ranking or record of its fellow Indian opponent, trading leads with Forest City throughout the first half and trailing by just four points with two minutes left to play, but those final two minutes belonged almost entirely to the host Indians, as they finished the game with a final 8-3 surge to finally shake the visiting Tribe and end Waukon’s season with a 50-41 defeat.
Waukon’s girls wrapped up their 2024-2025 campaign with a 15-8 season record, including a 4-2 mark in Northeast Iowa Conference (NEIC) play that placed the bucket Tribe in second place in this season’s four-team final NEIC standing. With its win over Waukon, Forest City went on to host West Marshall Saturday, February 22 in the Region 3 championship game. In a game that went right down to the wire, West Marshall edged the host Indians by a 51-48 final result, earning qualification for this year’s Class 3A State Tournament taking place next week at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines. That Class 3A State Tournament field once again includes teams coached by Waukon natives, including second-seeded Dubuque Wahlert coached by Kris Spiegler and fifth-seeded Estherville Lincoln Central coached by Don Martindale.
