Leland Jay Moose, 67, of Monona died Sunday, March 2, 2025 at Veterans Memorial Hospital, Waukon. Funeral Services were held Tuesday, March 11 at United Methodist Church, Monona with Rev. Kim Gates as the Officiant. Interment followed at Smithfield Cemetery, Rossville.
Leland was born June 7, 1957 to Albert and Marilyn (Timmerman) Moose in Waukon. He was baptized and confirmed. He graduated from MFL High School in 1976.
Leland was united in marriage with Cindy Jones. Four children were born to this union, Don, Jennifer, Terry and Bill. They were later divorced. Leland took pride as a cream cheese maker for Swiss Valley/Prairie Farms for 30-plus years, receiving several awards for his cheese making. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends and going to nut fries.
He collected a variety of things including anything Hamm’s beer, John Deere tractors, guns, and going to gun shows. He enjoyed spending time in his gun room and garage working on various projects like woodworking. He made many wooden doll houses and farm sets for family and friends. Leland made picnic tables and bunk beds. He also worked on fixing pallets from his work place. He was a lifetime member of the NRA, Yellow River Gun Club and Card Club.
Christmas was Leland’s favorite holiday. He made sure to have a family Christmas get-together every year. He collected Christmas bears and started getting bears for all his grandchildren too. Leland always loved a good cook-out.
He worked on making a park in Volney, and made wooden benches and a fireplace and had several fisherees there. He later created Camp S.P. in the back pasture of his parents’ land. All his family members came together over food and beer during the warm months. Many Fourth of July holidays were spent there, having a good cook-out and fireworks.
Leland enjoyed many hobbies like gardening, cooking, baking, swimming, camping and canoeing. He also loved trapping, hunting, shooting his gun and mushroom hunting. He once found the most mushrooms of his life, two garbage bags full. He liked going to Rendezvous events on Father’s Day weekend with his children. He had a love for food, you could find him at local restaurants and cafes enjoying a meal.
Leland is survived by his children, Don (Anna) Moose, Jennifer (Brandon Brown) Moose and Terry Moose; his grandchildren, Avery, Lainey and Riley Moose and Damion Hurst, and Joslyn and Logan Tobin; his siblings, Richard (Debbie) Moose and Douglas (Kelly) Moose; and his sister-in-law, Lesa Moose.
Leland was preceded in death by his parents, Albert in 1998 and Marilyn in 2021; his son, Bill Moose in 2009; and his brother, James Moose in 2016.
Leonard-Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service helped the family with the arrangements.
