Douglas Sharp, 83, of Lansing passed away peacefully Friday, February 14, 2025, at the home of Donovan and Stephanie Sharp in Fertile, surrounded by their loving family. Memorial services will be held Saturday, May 3 at 11 a.m. at St. Peter’s Christian Community Church in New Albin, with Rev. Dick Wohlgemuth officiating.
Friends may greet the family from 10 a.m. until the 11 a.m. service. Interment will be at the church cemetery.
Douglas Conrad Sharp was born September 30, 1941, in Waterloo, the son of William (Bill) and Carmen Sharp.
Doug achieved in a variety of career choices. He served as youth pastor at Trinity Church in Cedar Falls. He was a high school social studies teacher at LaPorte City Schools, 1969-1979. Doug served as Mayor of Cedar Falls from 1980-1988. He became Superintendent at Glenville-Emmons School District (MN) until 1997. Doug was also Superintendent of Eastern Allamakee School District in Lansing from 1997-2003. Doug served as an active member of the Gideons International.
Doug married Harriet Mast June 12, 1964, in Cedar Falls. Doug and Harriet resided in Cedar Falls until 2000 when they moved to their home in Lansing. They were blessed with three children: Mindy Sharp Klein of Kansas City, MO, Michelle (Chris) Bany of Rochester, MN, and Donovan (Stephanie) Sharp of Fertile. Doug had 13 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Doug was an active church member who faithfully attended and served at First Baptist Church in Cedar Falls, and later at St. Peter’s Community Church in New Albin. He had also attended Grace Global Methodist Church.
Doug is survived by his wife of 60 years, Harriet of Lansing; his children and their family members. He is also survived by his siblings: Wm. Paul Sharp of Waterloo, Mark (Kathy) Sharp of Cedar Falls, and Grace Burman of Denver, as well as nieces and nephews.
Doug was preceded in death by bis parents, Bill and Carmen Sharp; and a brother-in-law, Steve Burman.
Doug Sharp’s memory will be cherished by his family and friends. In lieu of flowers the family would suggest memorial gifts to The Gideons International.
