Waukon softball team plays to pair of wins at large West Delaware Tournament, including over Class 5A Cedar Rapids Washington

The Waukon softball team ended up with a bit of a lighter load than originally anticipated this past week, but the end to the week still proved to be heavy with competition, as the Lady Indians put two of five games fully completed this past week into the win column. Their week began with a Tuesday, June 17 non-conference road date at South Winneshiek that saw the diamond Tribe play to a 4-0 lead in the fourth inning before Mother Nature took control and suspended the game with stormy weather, with completion of the game still pending as of press time for this week’s edition.

The Indians were able to complete the rest of their week’s schedule, remaining in search of their first Northeast Iowa Conference (NEIC) victory of this summer’s campaign after falling at Crestwood Thursday, June 19 by an 11-3 count in six innings. Waukon’s diamond dwellers then wrapped up their week splitting four games played in the two-day West Delaware Tournament, first falling to Class 2A 13th-rated Cascade, 14-1 in six innings, and then defeating Class 5A Cedar Rapids Washington, 18-5 in five innings, during the first day of the tournament, Friday, June 20. The Lady Indians then split two more games Saturday, June 21, first defeating Monticello, 11-3 in five innings, before falling to Class 1A ninth-rated Edgewood-Colesburg, 11-1 in  four innings. Details from those four tournament games at West Delaware will be printed in the July 2 edition of The Standard.

Currently holding a 4-13 season record that includes a 0-7 mark in Northeast Iowa Conference play, the Lady Indians were next scheduled to host Decorah Tuesday, June 24 before playing at New Hampton Thursday, June 26 and then hosting Starmont in a non-conference battle Friday, June 27. They will then wrap up their regular season schedule during the first week of July, playing at Charles City Tuesday, July 1 and then at MFL/MarMac Thursday, July 3 before beginning postseason tournament play July 10, the details of which have yet to be released.
