by Brianne Grimstad
The Allamakee Community School District (ACSD) Board of Directors met for a special meeting Friday morning, June 27. The board approved (subject to a satisfactory background check) the hiring of Tyler Plein as the district’s maintenance director. ACSD Superintendent Jay Mathis noted that they received 14 applications for the position, and that Plein has experience with both HVAC and maintenance, and he should be a good fit for the ACSD Buildings and Grounds Department.
The board also approved Dillon Daniel as the assistant varsity girls track coach. Approval was also given to an increase in paraprofessional hours for Katie Martin.
Moving on from personnel matters, the board approved a Space Rental Agreement with Keystone AEA (Area Education Agency). Mathis noted that this is an extension of an existing agreement. He explained that in the past, the two entities usually would have an agreement in place for a few years at a time, but with the uncertainty of AEA funding due to recent State legislation, the agreement will now be implemented from year to year.
After tabling the motion to approve a bid for the ambulance sidewalk extension at the June 16 meeting in order to obtain more information on a bid, the board approved a bid from ACC (Adam’s Concrete Company) in the amount of $8,158 at the June 27 special meeting. A bid from Kerr Electric in the amount of $4,938 was also approved for replacement of the football field lights breaker. Mathis explained that the past couple of years, there have been some issues with the breaker overheating, causing the breaker to be tripped during football games and track meets.
The final item on the agenda was discussion and approval of a bid from H2I Group, in the amount of $12,490, for the high school gym floor for a recoating and new logo for the Upper Iowa Conference to be added to the flooring now that the school district will be transitioning from the Northeast Iowa Conference to the Upper Iowa Conference. Mathis noted that they are trying to get the company to do the work over the summer break, but if that doesn’t happen, they will do the project over the Christmas break. Mathis further noted that they are looking at the cost to have this update also made to the gym floor in the middle school at some point.
