Kee softball team’s 3-4 record this past week includes first UIC loss of this season, split of four games at Don Bosco Tournament

A homerun welcome home ... Kee softball junior pitcher Addison Winters is enthusiastically greeted by her teammates after blasting a solo homerun in the fourth inning of game one of the Hawks’ home doubleheader split with South Winneshiek Wednesday, June 25. Winters finished the home double-dip with seven hits in nine at-bats, hitting for the cycle on the night with four singles, a double, a triple and this homerun to score five runs and drive in two more. The Kee softball team played another busy week of all types of dates this past week, including a single game, a doubleheader and a weekend tournament, playing to a 3-4 record in those seven games with half of those losses coming to Class 4A Waverly-Shell Rock to book-end the week’s schedule.

The Lady Hawks opened the week with a 5-0 loss at home to those large school Go-Hawks Tuesday, June 24 before splitting a home Upper Iowa Conference (UIC) doubleheader with South Winneshiek Wedneday, June 25, falling to the Warriors by an 11-9 result to suffer their first UIC loss of this season before winning the nightcap, 9-5. They then split four games at the Don Bosco Tournament Friday and Saturday, June 27-28 to finish in sixth place in that 12-team field, defeating Hudson, 5-1, and falling to Vinton-Shellsburg, 5-3, in Friday’s pool play round before defeating Don Bosco, 7-6, and then falling to Waverly-Shell Rock again, 5-0, in Saturday’s final round.

Prior to this week’s slate, Kee’s diamond dwellers played in the large, 16-team West Delaware Tournament for two days over the previous weekend, first falling to Class 4A ninth-rated Western Dubuque, 12-3 in four innings, and then to Class 1A ninth-rated Edgewood-Colesburg, 12-4 in five innings, in the first day of tournament action Friday, June 20. The softball Hawks battled back to win both of their Saturday, June 21 games, with both of those wins coming against fellow UIC squads, including a 9-2 win over MFL/MarMac and a 6-1 victory over North Fayette Valley.

Holding a 22-11 season record that includes an 11-1 result for their Upper Iowa Conference campaign, the Hawks were next scheduled to wrap up their regular season by playing at West Central Monday, June 30 and then at North Fayette Valley Wednesday, July 2 in a battle for the UIC crown featuring two teams with 11-1 UIC marks at this point in the season. Kee will then begin postseason tournament play Wednesday, July 9.
