Kee baseball team sweeps postseason pair, 6-0 over Turkey Valley and 2-1 over South Winn, to win Class 1A District 5 crown and advance to Substate

Team-high production in two District games ... Kee baseball senior first baseman Brayden Darling looks in a throw as a South Winn baserunner tries to get back to the bag in the Hawks’ 2-1 home win over the Warriors in the Class 1A District 5 Tournament Finals Saturday, July 12. Darling tagged two singles and scored a run in the win over South Winn, and he also scored a team-high three runs in Kee’s 6-0 home win over Turkey Valley in the Class 1A District 5 Semifinals played Tuesday, July 8. A pair of wins this past week launched the Kee baseball team to the brink of its first Class 1A State Tournament berth since the Hawks’ 2021 State Runner-Up finish, an experience that some of this season’s senior team members got to be a part of as eighth graders at the start of their high school baseball careers. After receiving a first-round bye, this year’s Hawks began their postseason trail with a 6-0 home win over Turkey Valley Tuesday, July 8 before once again matching up with another fellow Upper Iowa Conference (UIC) squad, South Winneshiek, and playing to another postseason classic with the Warriors that this time came out in Kee’s favor at home by a 2-1 final result Saturday, July 12 to earn the Hawks the Class 1A District 5 championship and advancement to a Tuesday, July 15 Substate 3 championship match-up with ninth-rated Mason City Newman.

Through their District Championship victory, the Class 1A eighth-rated Hawks now hold a 31-10 season record that includes their 16-2 UIC title result. They were next scheduled to play for a berth in the Class 1A State Tournament Tuesday, July 15 at 7 p.m. at Decorah High School against that ninth-rated Mason City Newman squad, with the State Tournament to begin Monday, July 21 at Merchants Park in Carroll.
