Waukon softball team has season ended with 10-0 loss at top-rated Dubuque Wahlert in first round of Class 3A Regional Tournament

Gettin’ down and defensive ... Waukon softball senior shortstop Mari Delaney gets down in front of a ground ball in the Indians’ 10-0 loss in the opening round of Class 3A Region 1 Tournament play at top-rated Dubuque Wahlert Thursday, July 10. Delaney recorded the force-out at third base on the play to end up with one assist and one put-out on a diving catch in the ballgame, and she also joined fellow seniors Reese McCormick and Annie Ellingson in each playing in their final games in a Waukon softball uniform. As if the hills of Dubuque weren’t steep enough to climb on their own, the Waukon softball team faced another steep challenge in having to take its first step down the Class 3A Region 1 Tournament road against the top-rated Wahlert Catholic Golden Eagles in that Dubuque community Thursday, July 10. Being limited to just a single hit, the Lady Indians didn’t commit a single error or give up any free bases on walks or hit batters in the ballgame, but did surrender 14 hits of their own that included four homeruns, two triples and a double for extra bases on the way to a 10-0 Waukon mercy-rule defeat in four innings.

Wahlert junior pitcher Julia Roth nearly single-handedly took control of the ballgame all on her own, as she not only shut down the diamond Tribe’s bats to no hits in the three innings she spent in the circle, but she also blasted three homeruns at the plate that included a pair of solo round-trippers and a two-run blast. Roth struck out  four Indian batters and did not allow a walk for a perfect three innings in the circle. Sophomore Natalie Ruba came on for the Indians’ fourth and final at-bats, allowing the lone Waukon hit and the only two Tribe baserunners of the ballgame while striking out one batter as well.

The Lady Indians had their 2025 campaign brought to a close with a 4-20 season record that includes a 0-12 mark in Northeast Iowa Conference play. Wahlert went on to defeat Oelwein Saturday, July 12 by an 8-0 result to earn a spot in the Region 1 championship game Tuesday, July 15 to play West Delaware - 7-3 semifinals winners over Crestwood - for qualification for this year’s Class 3A State Tournament.
