Waukon football team runs away with 59-6 non-district win at Oelwein

Coming off a season-opening loss a week earlier that featured a much stronger first half than played out in the second, the Waukon football team put together two very strong halves of play in evening out its season record with a 59-6 non-district win at Oelwein Friday, September 5. Behind a strong rushing attack, the Indians played to a 16-0 halftime lead before rolling even stronger to a 37-0 final shut-out stretch after an early second-half scoring exchange.

That strong running game saw the grid Tribe rack up 266 yards and five touchdowns on the ground in compiling a 307-203 advantage in total offense for the contest. The host Huskies did hold the upperhand through the air with their primarily aerial offensive attack, tossing around a 201-41 margin over the airways, while Waukon all but shut down Oelwein’s running game, allowing just 28 positive yards but also wrapping up four quarterback sacks and 21 tackles for loss to help negate all but just two of those yards that ended up as the Huskies’ net rushing total. In addition to their six touchdowns on offense, the grid Tribe also scored one time each on defense and special teams, as six different Indians found the end zone on the night.

The Indians are next scheduled to return home to face another strong larger school, as an undefeated West Delaware team will visit Waukon this Friday, September 12. The Hawks have opened the season with a pair of decisive victories that include a 35-0 season-opening win at home over Marion and a 41-6 road win at the Tribe’s fellow Class 2A District 3 colleague North Fayette Valley this past Friday.
