The Allamakee Community School District (ACSD) Board of Directors met for its regular monthly meeting Monday, September 15. Under the Consent Agenda, the following personnel items were approved: Carolyn Homewood - increased cook hours; Neil Heins, middle school night custodian; Calista Morris, part-time elementary paraprofessional; and increased custodian hours for Brianna Meyer.

The board also accepted the resignation of Laura Iseli from her West Elementary paraprofessional position. The board also approved the transfer of Robert Johanningmeier from middle school paraprofessional to transportation paraprofessional. Also under the Consent Agenda, the board approved out-of-state field trips to Chanhassen Dinner Theater in April 2026 and to the Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) National Leadership Conference in June/July 2026. The board also approved three open enrollments out of the district and two open enrollments into the district.

During the Communications time of the meetings, the board met the new teachers in the district and also heard the Iowa Statewide Assessment of Student Progress (ISASP) results. For the most part, ACSD was below the State average for percentage of students not proficient in a subject area. Kelli Olson and Amy Holst went through each grade level from 12th grade to fourth grade, noting areas where the students were better than the State averages for not proficient and above proficient. They also pointed out a couple of areas in some grades where there was a need to dig deeper into the data and try to determine why test scores may have gone down.

In his Superintendent’s report, Jay Mathis noted that the ACSD has a projected five-year plan for the PPEL/SAVE funds based on current plans and the roof replacement study. He noted that “things are projecting nicely” and there will be funds to finish off the air conditioning in the auditorium, middle school cafeteria and kitchen, the east hallway of the middle school and the locker rooms.

Mathis also noted that the September Professional Development day will be used for emergency preparedness. Law enforcement, the hospital, first responders and Allamakee County Emergency Management will be involved as well.

Waukon High School Principal Jennifer Garin reported that the Vocational Partner meeting will be held September 23 at 7 p.m. The Construction class students have started work on the student-built house. This year’s project is located just half a block away from the school and is also the first home students have built without a basement.
