Kee football team falls to second consecutive top-10 rated opponent with 64-14 loss at Edgewood-Colesburg

Facing a second consecutive opponent ranked within the top 10 teams in the Eight-Player class, the Kee football team had to do so on the road this past Friday, September 12, playing their first away game of this season at the home of an undefeated Edgewood-Colesburg (Ed-Co) squad coming off a State Quarterfinals venture last season and two victories where the Vikings averaged a 55-21 margin of victory. The Hawks alternated nearly even quarters with frames where Ed-Co’s big play potential was on full display, as the Vikings erupted for three scoring plays of 60 yards or more and also posted a 4-0 advantage in turnovers to deal Kee its second consecutive loss, 64-14.

“We gave up way too many big plays,” Kee football head coach Chad Winters said. “We knew they were explosive coming into the game and we needed to do certain things to slow them down, but we just weren’t able to. Containing (sophomore quarterback Jax) Steger in the pocket was really tough to do, and when he broke contain we ended up giving up some big plays in the run and pass game.”

“We knew this stretch of games wasn’t going to be easy facing back-to-back ranked teams,” Coach Winters said. “The good thing is we have come out of both games relatively healthy for this time of the year and we know the areas that we must improve on as we face the rest of our district opponents.”

One of those District 4 opponents will be making the trip to Lansing this Friday, September 19 for Kee’s Homecoming game, as Central Elkader brings a 3-0 season record into the contest. Those three Warrior wins have come to teams sporting a combined 3-6 record so far this season, including a season-opening home win, 74-28, over West Central, a 66-0 home triumph over Central City, and a 42-14 road win at Calamus-Wheatland this past Friday, September 12.
