Following his lead ... Waukon football junior lineman McKyan Egan drives a West Delaware defender out of the way for fellow junior Gabe McCormick in the Indians’ 34-6 home loss to the Hawks Friday, September 12. Egan and his offensive line teammates helped pave the way for 152 yards of offense and one touchdown, with McCormick carrying the ball three times and also catching one pass for a total of 20 of those offensive yards. Egan also wrapped up five assisted tackles from his defensive line position. View and find out how to purchase this photo and many more by clicking on the Photo Galleries link on this webpage.
Hosting its second larger school opponent within its first three games of the season, the Waukon football team once again played a fairly strong first half but could not completely keep up that pace in the second half in falling to an undefeated West Delaware squad by a 34-6 final result at home Friday, September 12 in the grid Tribe’s final non-district game of this 2025 season. Playing the high-powered Hawks to a 0-0 shut-out through the game’s first quarter and to just a 14-6 deficit heading into the halftime break and well into the third quarter, the Indians suffered a pair of turnovers and a 20-0 outscoring over a period of about nine minutes of game time in the late third and early fourth frames to have the game’s final result slip a bit further away in the second half.
“I think it shows the potential our staff has seen all along,” Waukon football head coach Chad Beermann said about his team’s relatively even battle with West Delaware, with the exception of that late third quarter and early fourth quarter stretch. “So much of football is ‘this thing happened, and that means I need to do ‘this’ as a response’. We have not taken the next step, where the response becomes automatic. Where there is no thinking required, it becomes a reflex. If/when we hit that point, we can fully show our ability.”
The visiting Hawks nearly tripled up the Indians in total offensive yards during the contest, 451-152, with a majority of that West Delaware production coming on the ground with 364 yards and all of the Hawks’ offensive touchdowns, while the grid Tribe ended up with a negative rushing total of eight yards, suffering seven quarterback sacks, 15 tackles for loss and two fumbles, including one recovered for a final West Delaware touchdown late in the ballgame. The Indians nearly doubled up their Hawk visitors through the air, for a 160-87 advantage in receiving yards, with six different Indians catching at least one pass in the ballgame.
Holding a 1-2 season mark after completing its non-district schedule, the Indians are next scheduled to not only open up Class 2A District 3 play but also do so for their Homecoming game this Friday, September 19 against Forest City in a game that is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. The other Indians from this year’s Class 2A District 3 are still in search of their first win of this season, being outscored by a 148-31 margin in their three contests that have included a 69-0 loss at Clear Lake, a 19-15 home loss to Charles City, and a 60-16 defeat suffered this past Friday, September 12 to Algona at home.
