Waukon football team plays top-10 rated Osage nearly even for game’s latter half but can’t fully overcome 28-0 headstart in 47-24 district defeat

In a battle of teams still undefeated in Class 2A District 3 play heading into their Friday, October 3 match-up, the 3-2 Waukon football team traveled to the home of still overall undefeated and top-10 rated Osage. With the Green Devils having yet to surrender more than eight points in a game to any of its previous five opponents on the season, the Indians put together a strong 12-minute stretch throughout the middle of the contest for 24 points contributed to by all phases of the game, with those 24 points nearly equaling the entire point total Osage had allowed in its previous five games combined.

However, the grid Tribe also allowed its highest single-game point total of this season as well in this contest, including a 28-0 headstart for the Green Devils over the game’s first quarter and three-fourths. The Indians were able to chew that initial spread to just 10 points late in the third quarter but could not get any closer as Osage gained control once again for the game’s final quarter and one-third to deal the Tribe its first loss in District 3 play this season, 47-24.

Friday’s loss evens out the grid Tribe’s season record at 3-3 overall and hands Waukon its first loss in three games in Class 2A District 3 play. The Indians will be playing their final home game of this fall’s regular season schedule when they host New Hampton this Friday, October 10. The Chickasaws bring a 1-5 season record into Friday’s contest, with that lone win of the season coming against Class 1A MFL/MarMac, as New Hampton has yet to find the win column in Class 2A District 3 play after coming off a 20-14 home loss in overtime to a previously winless Forest City squad this past Friday and also falling to Osage by a 61-7 count the week prior to that.
