The Lansing City Council met Monday, October 6 in regular session. The evening’s agenda was framed around resident requests, capital planning, and improvement projects, and it included a citizen advocating for street improvements, financing matters for essential purchases and marina improvements, procedural updates to ensure compliance with state reviewers, and specific public works tasks aligned with the seasonal timeline.

Prior to the business of the meeting agenda, recognition was offered regarding the retirement of long-serving Meehan Memorial Lansing Public Library Director Derva Burke, with Carmen Golay appointed as the successor to that role. An open house is scheduled for Tuesday, November 4 from 5-7 p.m. at the library to commemorate Burke’s 18 years of service as library director.

CITIZEN CONCERNS: WESTGATE DRIVE
A Westgate Drive resident utilized photos and her recollections to describe a street that currently struggles with water drainage and is afflicted by ongoing issues. Noting an abundance of potholes and challenges with water on the street unable to drain to the curb, resident Patsy Spinner noted, “It’s still really bad and the road is now in rough shape overall.”

In response, the council acknowledged the problem, confirmed prior site visits, and tied Westgate Drive to near-term maintenance and plan review. Lansing Mayor Mike Verdon stated, “It’s obvious that this is a major problem for Westgate. We talked about this… back when it was chip coated, I think there was some concern with the quality of effort that went into the chip coating.”

The council committed to re-score Westgate Drive in the next plan update while moving ahead with late-October hot-mix patching already scheduled citywide, including on Westgate Drive. “I would say that the two worst streets in town right now, and I’ll rank them in order... the worst one is Shaw Street, it’s actually worse than Westgate,” Mayor Verdon noted.
