Looking to get back on the winning track after suffering its first Class 2A District 3 loss a week earlier to what appears to be this season’s District 3 champion, the Waukon football team was looking to also further solidify its State Play-Off position when the Indians hosted a New Hampton squad Friday, October 10 that has yet to win a game in District 3 play this season and has just one win to its credit so far this fall. Focusing more on establishing a ball control type of offense, the Indians compiled a 363-115 advantage in total offensive yards during the contest and came within the final 10 seconds of the ballgame of pitching a shut-out on the way to a 36-7 victory that boosted the grid Tribe into a tie for second place in the Class 2A District 3 standings with just one game remaining on this season’s regular season schedule, and that game being played against the Crestwood team the Indians now share that second-place district standing with.

The win improves the grid Tribe’s season record to 4-3 overall and leaves the Indians with a 3-1 mark in Class 2A District 3 play. That 3-1 District 3 record further leaves the Indians in a tie for second place with their next opponent, as they will travel to Crestwood this Friday, October 17 to wrap up their regular season schedule. The Cadets come off a 27-26 home loss to undefeated District 3 leader Osage, with that first District 3 loss for Crestwood pushing the 4-3 overall Cadets into that tie with the football Indians for second place in the current District 3 standings and Friday’s game setting up a battle for that District 3 runner-up spot and the possibility of hosting a first-round State Play-Off game.
