Helping pave the way to a career night ... Waukon football senior Owen Grimstad carries the ball through a hole created by his offensive line teammates on the way to his career night of offense in the Indians’ 34-13 home triumph over Bellevue Friday, October 24 in the opening round of the Class 2A State Play-Offs. Pictured, left to right, helping create that open space are senior lineman Connor Stilwell (#70 with back turned), sophomore tight end Easton Bucknell (side view at left), senior lineman Zach Perkins (#58), junior lineman McKyan Egan (#65), senior lineman Dajian Mitchell (#74 in front) and sophomore lineman Marcus Byrnes (#53 at right), who combined forces to help the grid Tribe rack up 410 total yards of offense in the victory. Behind this and other variants of that front line, along with some tough running of his own, Grimstad racked up career-high totals of 110 yards and two touchdowns on six pass receptions and 116 yards and two more touchdowns on 11 rushes. Qualifying for the Class 2A State Play-Offs for the ninth consecutive season, the 5-3 Waukon football team played host to a Bellevue team in the opening round of that play-off series Friday, October 24 that boasted a 7-1 season record and as high as a number-four ranking among Class 2A teams, all fueled by an air attack that led all teams across the state of Iowa with an average of 312 passing yards per game. Undaunted by those high-end numbers, the football Indians grounded that Comet air attack to its second lowest yardage total of the season and also ground out a 34-13 triumph in that Class 2A Play-Off opener, utilizing a 4-0 advantage in turnovers and racking up 410 yards of offense to help limit Bellevue to its lowest point total of the season while helping earn themselves advancement further down that postseason path.
The win advances the football Indians down the postseason road and also advances their season record to 6-3 overall. The grid Tribe’s reward for that first-round victory is a road trip to fifth-rated Alburnett this Friday, October 31 at 7 p.m. The 7-2 Pirates feature Class 2A’s leading rusher in junior Laken Caves with his 1,507 rushing yards, as he averages 8.3 yards per carry and has scored 18 touchdowns so far this season. Alburnett’s two losses include a 59-27 loss at Class 1A third-rated and undefeated Iowa City Regina and a 33-28 home loss in early October to the Bellevue team the Indians just disposed of this past Friday. The Pirates defeated Waukon’s fellow Class 2A District 3 opponent Crestwood at home this past Friday, 13-6, in their Class 2A opening round of State Play-Off competition.
