Allamakee County Veterans Museum Wall of Honor ...

For those with no Wall of Honor photo ... Those who have no photo of themselves on the Wall of Honor at the Allamakee County Veterans Museum in Waukon are still commemorated on the wall with images and identifying information pertaining to their service such as what is pictured above. The image above is one of those no-photo honorings that is 5”x7” in size inside a black frame, just like all the images on the Wall of Honor. Anyone who can provide a photo of any of the 17 Allamakee County Veterans still in need of a photo on the Wall of Honor, or a better quality photo for any of the 18 Veterans indicated as such in the accompanying Wall of Honor list is encouraged to email johnbauercamper@gmail.com. Photos still being sought for some Veterans from Allamakee County

The Allamakee County Veterans Museum, located on Allamakee Street in Waukon, proudly displays a Wall of Honor (pictured at right) that memorializes Allamakee County Veterans who were Killed in Action (KIA) or held as Prisoners of War (POW) during their military service. The wall currently features 95 such soldiers of Allamakee County origin who include 17 Prisoners of War and 78 who were Killed in Action.

The names and photos on the Wall of Honor mostly mirror the names of those soldiers who are also forever memorialized on the Allamakee County Veterans Memorial Monument located across the street from the museum on the front lawn of the Allamakee County Courthouse. Extensive research by members of the Allamakee County Veterans Memorial Committee, with assistance from family and friends, helped originate that monument list when it was first created and dedicated in May of 2005. The Wall of Honor furthered that honoring of those local heroes when the Allamakee County Veterans Museum was opened in May of 2022.

PHOTOS STILL NEEDED
In order to more fully honor those individuals who served and sacrificed so much, organizers of the Wall of Honor are still in search of photos for 17 of those honored Veterans who have no photo at all, as well as better quality photos for another 18 of those Veterans whose photo quality could be improved upon, whether their current photo is smaller or perhaps faded or not clear due to poor photo quality. Those who have no photo at all are still listed within their respective frame on the wall by name and other identifying specifics regarding their military service (see example in photo accompanying this article).

Allamakee County Veterans Museum officials are seeking help from family members, friends and the general public in locating good quality photos of those individuals, who are designated as such in the listing of Wall of Honor Veterans to follow. Anyone who has pictures of these men is encouraged to bring them to the museum or email johnbauercamper@gmail.com so that arrangements can be made to make a copy of that photo for this ongoing project.
