Allamakee County will be lighting county landmarks green in support of Operation Green Light for Veterans November 4-11

Area residents and entities are invited to participate by changing at least one light bulb to green

Allamakee County has announced that several county buildings are being illuminated green during the next week as part of Operation Green Light for Veterans, a nationwide effort by counties, the National Association of Counties (NACo), and the National Association of County Veterans Service Officers.

From November 4-11, county buildings and landmarks will be illuminated green to show support for veterans and raise awareness around the resources available at the county, state, and federal levels to assist veterans and their families. As of press time for this week’s edition of The Standard, those Allamakee County buildings include certain offices in the Allamakee County Courthouse in Waukon and the Driftless Area Education and Visitors Center in Lansing.

Now in its fifth year, Operation Green Light is expected to draw hundreds of participating counties from states across the nation. The county role in administering services for veterans includes County Veterans Service Officers (VSOs) helping fellow former service members access more than $52 billion in federal health, disability and compensation benefits each year, as well as other services supporting the approximately 200,000 service members who transition into civilian communities annually.

“Allamakee County is very grateful for our veterans and all they have sacrificed for our country and all they continue to do for our community,” shared Heather Homewood, Director of Allamakee County Veteran Services.

Allamakee County residents, businesses and community organizations are encouraged to participate in Operation Green Light by changing one light to a green bulb.

“By shining a green light, we let our veterans know that they are seen, appreciated, and supported,” Homewood said. “Allamakee County feels it is very important to support our area veterans and ensure that they are informed of their benefits and get the assistance they need in accessing those benefits. All veterans and their dependents  are encouraged to speak with their county VSO about what is available. We would like to show our appreciation for all you have done by continuing to help care for you.”

Counties and residents across the country are sharing their participation on social media using the hashtag #OperationGreenLight. For more information on Operation Green Light, visit online at https://www.naco.org/program/operation-green-light-veterans.
