Veterans Memorial Hospital (VMH) Community and Home Care - Allamakee Public Health has a new location at 12 East Main Street in downtown Waukon as of early November. Area residents and clients of the agency should note that its phone number will remain the same, 563-568-5660. This move allows Home Care/Public Health staff to continue providing care in a space that better meets the needs of its numerous clients and staff.

Community and Home Care/Public Health had been housed on the third floor of Veterans Memorial Hospital prior to the recent move, and VMH CEO Michael Coyle previously noted that there will be more space, easier parking and the move will allow the agency to be able to grow services and offer better patient comfort. The vacated space on the third floor of VMH will become offices for Senior Life Solutions, which will offer counseling for senior citizens, with more information about that agency to be released in coming months.

All immunizations, including flu and Covid vaccines, will now be administered at this new East Main Street location, and these are currently available by appointment only. Patients are also encouraged to call the phone number listed above if they need assistance upon arrival at the new location.

Anyone who is interested in receiving home care services can contact Veterans Memorial Hospital Community & Home Care at 563-568-5660 or consult with their health care provider, who can then order these services for them.

NOVEMBER IS NATIONAL HOME CARE MONTH
Each November, communities across the nation come together to celebrate National Home Care Month, a time dedicated to recognizing the compassionate professionals who make it possible for millions of Americans to receive quality health care in the comfort of their own homes. Veterans Memorial Hospital Community and Home Care is a locally-based, home health care agency serving Allamakee County.

Registered nurses, home health aides and both occupational and physical therapists travel throughout the Allamakee County area to provide essential services that allow seniors, individuals with disabilities, and those recovering from illness or injury to maintain independence and dignity in the comfort of their own homes.

“Home care services cost only a fraction of hospitalization and nursing home placement, and we can successfully care for these comparable health problems right in the home,” states Lisa Moose, RN, Community and Home Care Director.  “Besides these positive factors, people are usually happier and heal more quickly at home, so we encourage anyone who has been hospitalized or has had a change in their health status to ask if they can have our home care services.”

Skilled home care services offered by the registered nurses at Veterans Memorial Hospital Community and Home Care include, but are not limited to, assisting individuals with their medications, providing wound care, providing catheter and colostomy care, overseeing rehabilitation in-home programs, assessing blood pressures, performing blood tests, providing IV therapy, and instructing the patients regarding any other health problems. Registered nurse staff are on-call through the agency 24 hours a day, seven days a week, to help with urgent needs that may arise.

The demand for home-based care continues to grow as more Americans choose to age in place. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment in home health and personal care services is expected to grow much faster than average over the next decade, highlighting the vital importance of the home care workforce.
