Board of Supervisors approves variety of appointments at annual organizational meeting, hears funding request at its first regular session of new calendar year

The Allamakee County Board of Supervisors met Friday, January 2 for its annual organizational meeting in addition to its Monday, January 5 regular session meeting. The Standard’s coverage of those two meetings is below.

FRIDAY, JANUARY 2
The Allamakee County Board of Supervisors organizational meeting Friday, January 2 was called to order by County Auditor Denise Beyer. The appointments of Tom Clark as Board of Supervisors Chairperson and Dan Byrnes as Chairperson Pro-Tem were approved. Supervisor Dennis Keatley was present in addition to Clark and Byrnes for this first Supervisors meeting of the new calendar year.

The meeting moved into Public Comment with Executive Director Val Reinke of Allamakee County Economic Development (ACED) making note of recent events within the county including those scheduled for New Year’s Eve and Day. Reinke advised that restaurants and other venues were busy throughout the county during New Year’s Eve. She discussed the Effigy Mounds National Monument’s Winter Film Festival which was scheduled to begin Saturday, January 3 and continues Sunday, February 8 and Saturday, March 7.

County Conservation Director Ross Geerdes made note of the Full Moon Hike scheduled for later that same day, Friday, January 2, at Fish Farm Mounds. In addition, Geerdes made note of ongoing work relating to the Black Hawk Bridge replacement project with ice being broken early that morning on the Mississippi River to allow the use of the car ferry between Iowa and Wisconsin. In conclusion, Geerdes informed the Supervisors that Melissa Hermsen would be starting next week as the new office manager/assistant naturalist at the Driftless Area Education and Visitors Center.

The meeting moved into the first of several organizational matters on the meeting agenda with the Supervisors approving to set weekly regular session Board of Supervisors meetings as 9 a.m. Monday with 10 minutes of Public Comment time to be allotted.
