The Allamakee Community School District (ACSD) Board of Directors met Monday night, January 19 for its regular monthly board meeting.
Under the Consent Agenda, the following personnel were approved, pending a satisfactory background check: Justin Thrailkill and Carley Spain as volunteer golf coaches, Bob Wasson as a volunteer track coach, and a change to full-time hours from part-time for paraprofessionals Calista Morris and Mataya Sommer. The board also accepted the resignation of Janet Walleser from her third grade teaching position due to retirement. Approval was also given to a special education contract with College Community School District and a Microsoft renewal contract in the amount of $5,484.48.
During the Communications portion of the meeting, there was a presentation on the upcoming eighth grade trip to Washington D.C. Payton Deitzenbach went over the itinerary for the students and chaperones for the eight-day trip. She noted that this will be the third year for ACSD eighth grade students to participate in the trip. Students will travel by bus to Washington D.C., and stop at famous landmarks along the way such as the Flight 93 Memorial, Gettysburg Battlefield and Harpers Ferry National Historical Park. While in the nation’s capital, the students will be able to see various national monuments and memorials, visit the Capitol, and some of the museums such as the Smithsonian. They will also be able to have dinner and dancing on a cruise down the Potomac River.
Moving on to the administrators’ reports, ACSD Superintendent Jay Mathis noted that with the new calendar year, the district is starting to work on upcoming budget preparations, insurance renewal and contract negotiations, as well as looking at the 2026/2027 school calendar. He noted that they are also keeping an eye on what will be happening at the State legislative level regarding Supplemental State Aid (SSA).
Waukon High School Principal Jennifer Garin reported that she is working on finishing up the first phase of Secondary Career and Technical Education (CTE) reporting, and that will be reviewed by the State. She also noted that the heat has been turned on in the student-built house and insulation has been installed and drywall hung. Welding and Manufacturing students toured the student-built house and spoke with area professionals working in framing, electrical and plumbing.
