To the Editor:
I am angry, despondent, mortified and most important, ashamed. I am ashamed for how our country is now seen by the world. Half of our voters elected, against our dire warnings, a dangerous maniac who wants to rule the world for his own monetary gain and power.
An angry, vindictive man who has gone after his “enemies” with the weaponization of the Justice Department, the horrendous build-up of untrained and vicious ICE agents attacking anyone who is brown, killing American witnesses to their brutality.
A wanna-be emperor stealing into a country with oil reserves, in order to enrich his corporate cronies, and threatening to invade Greenland, again to enrich himself with their vast resources.
And don’t forget, raping our own country, opening up national treasures to exploitation through mining, oil drilling, clear cutting forests and destruction of sacred grounds and wildlife habitat that can never be restored.
These are just the most recent atrocities he has committed. There are too many to recount here. They go on and on, a new one every day.
I can’t stop him, neither can you. But together the country can. We need to vote. Midterm elections are coming up, and we need to replace many in both houses of congress. We need “small d” democrats (advocates or supporters of democracy, by definition) to step up and be elected. I don’t care which party, but any candidate that recognizes the tragic result of allowing this president to continue on in his destruction of our democracy. Once we have restored balance, people can go back to their party, but for now, we need to act as one party, that of claiming back our rights and power, and removing it from the president.
I recently heard some historian say that Republics in the past have only lasted 200 years. Lets not let ours go the way of history.
