Higher patient volumes, continued growth in hospital and clinic services reflected in positive bottom line for the month of December at Veterans Memorial Hospital

The Veterans Memorial Hospital (VMH) Board of Trustees met for its regular monthly meeting Tuesday, January 27. Reports provided during the meeting indicated that the month of December was a good month for the hospital.

Gross Patient Revenue came in just under the five-million-dollar mark at $4,933,466. There was a slight reduction in contractuals for the month, and VMH Administrator Michael Coyle explained that the hospital received an additional settlement to the end of the year cost report, which reduced the contractuals.

After taking out contractuals and Charity Care and Bad Debt, the Total Operating Revenue for the month was $2,678,430. Coyle noted that the Charity Care and Bad Debt were a little bit higher for the month, but he also noted that it is there for a purpose and they want to make sure that it’s being used appropriately.

Looking at expenses, Coyle noted that the VMH staff has “been doing an amazing job controlling wages, benefits and supplies.” He noted those are areas the hospital can directly regulate monthly. “We’ve been doing a great job staying under budget in those areas,” he commented.

Total Expenses for the month of December came in at $2,722,469. He noted that there was a little more expense than operating revenue, but the hospital also had a good month for non-operating revenue also. VMH ended December 2025 with a bottom line of $96,219. “The last three or four months, we’ve kind of rebounded from a slower July and August,” Coyle noted.
