ACSD Board of Directors holds public hearings on 2026-2027 school calendar and proposed capital improvements, sets hearings for property taxes, budget matters

The Allamakee Community School District (ACSD) Board of Directors met in a pair of sessions in February. The board met for a special session Tuesday morning, February 10, to set a public hearing for proposed Capital Improvements for 5:30 p.m. during its next regular session, which was scheduled for Tuesday, February 17 due to the President’s Day holiday falling on the board’s regular meeting date of Monday, February 16.

At that Tuesday, February 17 regular session there were no written or verbal comments made during a public hearing that was also held regarding the 2026-2027 School Calendar. There were also no written or verbal comments during the public hearing for the proposed Capital Improvements.

Under the Consent Agenda, the board approved the following staff: volunteers Jane Johnson, middle school play, and Jon Snitker, middle school track coach. The following resignations were also approved: Teresa Reeg, Preschool PLC (Professional Learning Community) Teacher Leader; Molly Woodard, 6-12 Vocal Music Teacher, Musical Director; Sherri Lyons, retiring teacher; and Bob Wasson, girls JJV basketball coach. There were two open enrollments into the district approved and one open enrollment out of the district approved. The board also approved a special education service contract between ACSD and the Eastern Allamakee Community School District for a student to come to ACSD.

During the communications time of the meeting, Waukon High School Principal Jen Garin, Middle School Principal Luke Steege, ACSD Curriculum Director Kelli Olson and Elementary Schools Principal Samantha Thornton gave a presentation to those present regarding Evidence-Based Practices. They discussed how the district has put together an Evidence-Based Practices “playbook” and how the staff of ACSD use professional learning time, digital resources and peers to develop strategies to use in the classroom. They also talked about what the next steps for the district will look like and how they are looking ahead. It was noted that this is something that is being built on daily and the strategies will continue to evolve to best serve the students in ACSD.
