Waukon City Council hosts pair of public hearings, holds discussion on proposed annual sidewalk inspection and replacement program

The Waukon City Council met in regular session Monday, March 16 to address a full agenda of matters including the Public Hearing relating to changing the zoning district classification from “M-1” Manufacturing to “B-2” General Business District for Certain Real Estate, the Final Reading and adoption of the Ordinance amending the code by changing the city elections procedure, and discussion of the proposed development of a sidewalk inspection and replacement program. The meeting was called to order by Mayor Arvid Hatlan with council members present including Cassie Handke, Nicholas Engrav, Tim Smedsrud, Steve Wiedner and John Lydon.
There was no Public Comment with the meeting then moving into Department Reports with Water and Sewer Superintendent Jim Cooper providing an update. Cooper discussed matters relating to the heating unit at the Wastewater Treatment Plant. He noted that the contractor that installed the heating unit has not recently requested a release of funds from the project’s retainage, the standard practice of holding back a portion of a contractor’s payment, with the most recent change or repair holding up to recent winter conditions but not yet tested against more severe below zero temperatures. Cooper also discussed ongoing maintenance involving the removal of sand at Well #5.
Interim Street Superintendent Pat Egan noted that street light bulbs have been changed out with that same contractor also inspecting the four-way stoplight camera with maintenance anticipated. Egan advised that the Street Department will be continuing to haul away snow in the morning.
Police Chief Paul Wagner advised that Emergency Management Coordinator Corey Snitker has continued to monitor progress relating to the USDA grant application associated with the storm siren replacement. Wagner noted that the application is still in the queue waiting for review.
