National Nutrition Month® observed in March; Allamakee Public Health shares tips to make healthy choices

March is National Nutrition Month®. Veterans Memorial Hospital (VMH) Community and Home Care - Allamakee Public Health and the Iowa Department of Health and Human Services (Iowa HHS) are working together to share that making nutritional food choices extends the health of Iowa families along with their ability to thrive.

It is important to continue to provide education around healthy food and eating practices about the importance of nutritional eating. Consuming foods from all food groups daily keeps families fueled for activities throughout the day.

It’s also important to drink water to maintain hydration.

Families should limit the amount of ultra-processed foods and sugary drinks consumed. Building a good routine of preparing meals at home and choosing better snacks like fruits and vegetables can help to limit the items that are not considered the best for your diet. Talking with a healthcare professional can help to provide information about nutritional eating habits.

The Iowa Department of Health and Human Services and/or Veterans Memorial Hospital Community and Home Care - Allamakee Public Health have resources available to help learn about healthy eating habits and how to create meals on a budget.
