The Waukon boys track and field team came away from its Class 2A State Qualifying Meet at North Fayette Valley High School Thursday, May 14 knowing its members had earned two automatic qualifications for this year’s State Track Meet in Des Moines with either a first- or second-place finish in those events at a meet that took longer than eight hours to complete due to extensive lightning delays. The Indians had to wait even longer to learn whether any of their efforts at that meet were good enough to earn at-large State Meet qualification with one of the top-eight event performances that did not finish first or second in any of the eight Class 2A State Qualifying Meets held across the state of Iowa that same evening, with the track and field Tribe learning Friday afternoon that their event qualification total had tripled, with four more at-large performances making for six total State Qualifying efforts that helped the Indians score 60 team points and finish eighth overall in that 12-team State Qualifying Meet field.
Those six qualified events for the Indians will now compete among the Class 2A elite in their respective State Meet events later this week at Drake Stadium in Des Moines.
