Veterans Memorial Hospital experiences positive financial month of March, pursues grants and facility designations

The month of March ended on a positive financial note for Veterans Memorial Hospital (VMH) in Waukon, according to information shared at the April meeting of the VMH Board of Trustees. VMH Administrator Michael Coyle noted that patient volumes were up in most areas for the month.

The Total Revenue for the month was $5,194,391. Contractuals/Bad Debt/Charity Care came in at $2,637,027 for the month, and Total Expenses came in at $2,707,278 for the month. The hospital ended March with a Net Operating Revenue of $18,521, and that number jumps to $189,017 when Non-Operating Revenue is added in.

Looking at statistics for the month of March, the VMH clinics in Waukon and Postville had a total of 1,544 visits, not including nurse-only or blood pressure checks. There were 328 Emergency Room (ER) visits in March, compared to 277 in February. The Emergency Medical Services (EMS) department had 72 calls in March, compared to 62 in February. There were 177 patient days in March, compared to 117 in February.

In March, 90 ultrasounds were performed, compared to 68 in February. There were 158 mammograms done in March, compared to 70 in February. VMH has also added two new therapists to its therapy department, one a speech therapist and the other a physical therapist who also specializes in pediatrics. The therapy department continues to be busy.

Tara Fink, PMHNP was promoted to Medical Director of the Behavioral Health Program within the VMH clinics. Coyle explained that her main role will be to ensure all providers and support staff for the behavioral health program are all “on the same page”; that the program provides quality behavioral health care to all patients; to grow the program and recruit providers; and help write policy and procedures; chart audits; and oversee the entire program.
