The Waukon boys track and field team had nine young men competing in a total of five events where all high school track and field athletes long to be this past week. The performances turned in by that collection of three seniors, two juniors and four sophomores at this year’s Class 2A State Track and Field Meet at Drake Stadium in Des Moines Thursday-Saturday, May 21-23 resulted in a trio of top-10 finishes that include a pair of All-State finishes within the top eight of this season’s Class 2A State Meet field and a pair of new school records along the way.

Thursday of the season grand finale proved to be the Indians’ best overall placement day, as they claimed a pair of those top-10 finishes in both events they competed in. The first of those came right away in the first Class 2A event on the track this year, the shuttle hurdle relay. Needing a top-eight finish in the 24-team preliminary event to advance to the finals, the hurdling Tribe foursome of juniors Gabe McCormick and Issiah Moudy and sophomores Easton Bucknell and Silas Keeling came up just one placewinning and eight-hundredths of a second short of accomplishing that feat, finishing ninth in a time of 1:01.55 that rewrote their own school record in the event set just a week earlier. That clocking placed Waukon second in its four-team heat, behind a Central Lyon team that qualified with third-best preliminary time. Treynor was crowned this year’s Class 2A shuttle hurdle relay champion with a winning time of 58.48 seconds in Saturday’s event finals.

The results recorded by the Waukon boys at this season’s grand finale yielded five team points to tie them with Cascade, Hull Western Christian, Centerville and Woodward-Granger for 40th place out of 56 teams that scored points at this season’s Class 2A State Meet. Alburnett won this season’s Class 2A team championship with its team total of 66 team points.
