Lady Indians’ 4x800 and 4x200 relays set new school records; Shuttle hurdle relay claims All-State finish
The Waukon girls track and field team took one of its largest contingencies ever to every high school track and field team’s ultimate destination during the latter half of this past week, having 14 young ladies compete in nine different events Thursday-Saturday, May 21-23 at the Class 2A State Track and Field Meet held at Drake Stadium in Des Moines. That sizable representation brought home a trio of top-10 performances in a field of Class 2A competitors who turned in some of the best results in the history of the Class 2A season grand finale, with two of the Lady Indian efforts resulting in the best performances in the history of the Waukon girls track and field performances with new school records.
Thursday’s opening day of competition included both individual and relay events for the track and field Tribe, with the day starting off for the Lady Indians in those two individual competitions. Two Waukon girls were involved in the first of those individual events, as junior Blythe Bucknell and sophomore Sophia Palmer were looking to finish in the top eight overall competitors in the Class 2A shot put preliminary round early Thursday afternoon to advance to the event finals.
For their efforts at this year’s season grand finale, the Lady Indians scored two team points to finish tied with Columbus Junction for 40th place out of 47 teams that scored points. The Pella Christian team that set new State Meet records in many of the same events the Waukon girls competed in this year won this year’s Class 2A team championship with a total of 78 team points.
