Waukon City Council remands pair of variance requests back to Planning & Zoning, approves accepting requests for proposals for solid waste collection

The Waukon City Council met in regular session Monday, June 1 to address a full agenda of matters including discussion relating to electric bicycles and electric scooters, the review of two variance requests and the consideration of purchasing two thermal imaging monoculars for police vehicles. The meeting was called to order by Mayor Arvid Hatlan with council members present including Cassie Handke, Steve Wiedner, Nic Engrav, John Lydon and Tim Smedsrud.
During Public Comment, property owner Craig Bloxham made note of concerns relating to the proposed variance for 508 West Street SW allowing for a six-feet side yard setback to build a garage. He noted that he has not been formally contacted by postal mail relating to this variance. Bloxham discussed concerns relating to water run-off from the existing house and garage at the 508 West Street SW address with connected gutters and eaves spouts from both structures creating water run-off issues which will increase with the proposed additional garage.
Edith Bloxham, another property owner in that same neighborhood, requested that a minimum of six feet from the overhang of the proposed garage structure to her property line be maintained with water run-off being an issue. Edith Bloxham noted that she also had not received a letter relating to the proposed variance.
Under Department Reports, Park, Recreation and Wellness Director Jeremy Strub advised that the swimming pool has opened for the season and that summer recreation programs will be in full swing later this week.
Water and Sewer Superintendent Jim Cooper advised that the Wastewater Treatment Plant’s water permit has been renewed for another three-year period. Cooper also discussed lift station maintenance in addition to confirming that lift station #5 is operational.
Interim Street Superintendent Pat Egan advised that the municipal parking lot along Allamakee Street will be closed for maintenance including crack filling Wednesday, June 3.
