Waukon softball team falls in pair of narrow losses at MFL/MarMac

In what turned out to be its only competition of this past week, the Waukon softball team ended up on the short end of a couple narrow battles in an Upper Iowa Conference (UIC) doubleheader played at MFL/MarMac Friday, June 12. Originally scheduled for Monday, June 8, that original date was rained out and rescheduled, as was a Wednesday, June 10 home doubleheader with Postville that had to be rescheduled to July 2 due to wet field conditions.

In Friday’s dramatic double-dip, the Indians seemed to have the upperhand in opportunities, out-hitting the host Bulldogs by a 15-8 result but not necessarily being able to capitalize on those chances in falling by scores of 2-0 in game one and by an 11-10 result in a marathon contest that lasted 10 innings. The diamond Tribe stranded a total of 27 runners on base in the two games combined, including 14 of those in scoring position and leaving the bases loaded in two different innings.

Holding a 2-9 season record, including a 2-6 mark in Upper Iowa Conference play, the softball Indians were next scheduled to host New Hampton for a varsity doubleheader Monday, June 15 before playing at Decorah Tuesday, June 16 and then at Kee for two varsity games Wednesday, June 17, prior to competing in the West Delaware Invitational Friday and Saturday, June 19-20. Waukon’s girls will then play varsity doubleheaders at Crestwood Monday, June 22 and at home against Central Elkader Wednesday, June 24.
