Waukon baseball team clinches UIC Large School division championship with wins over NFV and MFL, ends regular season with road win at Oelwein
UIC Large School division crown is first top finish in baseball standings since 2007 season
The Waukon baseball team wrapped up its regular season with three games this past week, including two final games that helped the diamond Tribe clinch the Large School division championship of the Upper Iowa Conference (UIC). Those two UIC contests came on the same night against two different teams Monday, June 29, as the Waukon boys first handed North Fayette Valley a 13-2 mercy-rule loss in six innings before doing likewise to MFL/MarMac by a 14-0 count in five frames.
Those two final UIC victories wrapped up the Indians’ Upper Iowa Conference season with a 14-3 overall mark that landed the Tribe on top of the Large School division of the UIC season standings, one overall loss ahead of second-place New Hampton, who the Indians won two of three games against this season. In the overall 10-team UIC standings, that 14-3 mark places Waukon behind Small School division season champion South Winneshiek and its 16-1 overall UIC mark. The Tribe’s UIC record also equaled Kee’s 14-3 overall league mark, with each of those top UIC Small School division teams accounting for one of the other Waukon losses in UIC play this season.
That Large School title is the first season standings championship of any sort since the baseball Tribe claimed its lone Northeast Iowa Conference (NEIC) championship during the 2007 season with a 15-3 NEIC mark. That team was led by such senior names as Ryan Jones, Dillon Mellick, Cody Snitker and Derek Snitker, as well as the battery twin brother tandem of juniors Cody and Logan Anderson, along with fellow juniors Colin Egan and Zack Woodbeck.
Following that Large School division clinching, the baseball Indians wrapped up their regular season with a non-conference victory at Oelwein Tuesday, June 30. The diamond Tribe completed its 21-5 regular season mark with a 12-0 road win over the host Huskies.
After receiving a first-round postseason bye, the Indians were scheduled to start Class 2A district tournament play Tuesday, July 7 at home against either Osage or North Fayette Valley, with further details of that postseason path printed in a shaded box elsewhere on this week’s Sports pages.
