Grazing Field Day to be hosted by Waukon NRCS
Local livestock producers and landowners looking to enhance their pasture management and explore cutting-edge technologies are invited to a special Grazing Field Day hosted by the Waukon NRCS office and area staff. The event will take place Friday, July 24 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at 1352 Hawes Rd, Harpers Ferry.
Effective grazing management is a cornerstone of successful livestock operations, optimizing forage utilization and promoting healthy pastures. Rotational grazing has proven benefits for both livestock and land, improving forage quantity and quality while building soil health. This field day aims to delve deeper into these established practices and introduce exciting new advancements.
A key highlight of the event will be a practical demonstration of virtual fencing technology. This innovative approach uses GPS-enabled collars and smartphone applications to create dynamic, fence-free boundaries, offering unprecedented flexibility in managing livestock rotation. Attendees will see firsthand how this technology can simplify pasture management, reduce labor, and allow for more precise control over grazing patterns, helping farmers adapt to changing forage conditions with ease.
Beyond virtual fencing, participants will also learn about:
• The enduring benefits of rotational grazing, focusing on how these practices contribute to higher quality forage and overall pasture productivity.
• NRCS Grazing Programs, including available cost-share and other incentives that can assist producers in implementing both rotational grazing systems and virtual fence technology on their farms.
• A compelling Soil Health Demonstration utilizing an NRCS rainfall simulator. This visual demonstration will illustrate the critical differences in water infiltration, erosion, and overall soil health between overgrazed and properly managed pastures, underscoring the long-term benefits of sustainable grazing.
