Punt block for a safety ... Waukon football junior Brody Bernau gets a hand on this Osage punt attempt from the end zone in the Indians’ 30-20 home win over the Class 2A ninth-rated Green Devils Friday, October 2. Bernau blocked the punt and then raced the punter to the loose ball, which ended up rolling out of bounds for a safety and a 16-0 Waukon lead. In addition to his special teams play, Bernau also caught one pass for a 19-yard first down and also wrapped up one each of solo and assisted tackles in the win. In a battle of teams both undefeated in Class 2A District 3, the Waukon football team hosted overall undefeated and Class 2A ninth-rated Osage Friday, October 2 for its 2026 Homecoming game. A quick start to the ballgame for the Indians saw all three phases of the game - offense, defense and special teams - contribute to a 16-0 headstart for the grid Tribe just over 30 seconds into the second quarter to help outlast a 20-16 upperhand the Green Devils battled to over the final three quarters of the contest.
“While we have had quite a few injuries that cut into our options, the group we have still gives us a lot of flexibility on offense and defense,” Waukon football head coach Chad Beermann said of his team’s contributions in all phases that contributed to that early headstart. “On special teams, we use a lot of the kids who don’t start on offense or defense, and this is an opportunity for them to shine.”
Holding a 4-2 season record and improving to a 3-0 result in Class 2A District 3 play, the Indians are next scheduled to travel New Hampton for their final road game of the regular season this Friday, October 9 to try and keep their undefeated Class 2A District 3 season alive. The Chickasaw currently hold a 3-3 season record that includes a 1-2 mark in Class 2A District 3 play, coming off a 40-14 win at Forest City this past Friday, October 2 after back-to-back District 3 losses to Osage, 21-7, and 35-0 to Class 2A seventh-rated Crestwood.
