ON TO STATE for senior Nora Davis as Waukon girls cross country team finishes four points shy of team qualification at Class 2A State Qualifying Meet at Monticello

Top-15 finish earns individual State Meet qualification ... Waukon girls cross country senior Nora Davis ran her way to an 11th-place finish at the Class 2A State Qualifying Meet hosted by Monticello Thursday, October 22, earning herself individual qualification for the Class 2A State Meet later this week. Davis clocked in at 20:20.9 to place herself within the top-15 finish required to earn advancement to that season grand finale, where she will compete this Friday, October 30 at 2 p.m. In addition to being pictured competing in the photo below, Davis is also pictured above (fifth from right) with her “Ticket Punched” banner among the other top-15 individual finishers recognized as individual State Qualifiers after Thursday’s State Qualifying Meet competition. Just four points proved to make the Class 2A State Qualifying Meet hosted by Monticello Thursday, October 22 the end of the 2026 season for all but one member of the Waukon girls cross country team, as the Lady Indians finished in fourth place in a 12-team field that included five teams rated in Class 2A’s top-20. That lone distance Tribe member to extend her season was senior Nora Davis, who ran to an 11th-place result to finish within the required top-15 runners in that race field to earn individual qualification for this year’s Class 2A State Meet.

Ranked ninth in the most recent Iowa Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association polls prior to the State Qualifier at Monticello, the Lady Indians had all seven runners finish within the top 35 individuals - the only team to do so, including their final four of the required five scored finishers all placing within six placewinnings and 20 seconds of one another behind the 11th-place team lead of Davis. However, that tight pack wasn’t quite enough to overcome the also high-end efforts of eighth-rated Monticello (all five scored runners in the top-35 including the meet champion and third-place finisher), 12th-rated Denver (all five scored runners in the top-35 including the meet runner-up), and 14th-rated MFL/MarMac, which had all five of its scored runners finish in the top-37 including a trio of top-15 finishes that proved to be enough to make up for the Bulldogs’ final two scored runners finishing behind Waukon’s, edging out the Lady Indians for the third and final State-qualifying team finish by just four points.

ON TO STATE
Davis will now compete among Class 2A’s distance elite this Friday, October 30 in a Class 2A race that begins at 2 p.m. at Lakeside Municipal Golf Course near Fort Dodge. She will be competing for the second time on that season grand finale course after having helped the Lady Indians to a Class 2A State Runner-Up team finish last fall. She will be starting in Box 5 out of 21 grid boxes at the Class 2A starting line.
