Sunday motorcycle accident near Churchtown injures Waukon woman

The Allamakee County Sheriff’s Department received a report of a motorcycle accident Sunday, July 19 at approximately 8:20 p.m. on State Highway 9 east of Churchtown.
The Sheriff’s Department reported that Stacy Lynn Riley of Waukon, age 45, lost control of the motorcycle she was driving and left the roadway. She suffered severe injuries as a result of the accident and was transported to Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon before being transported by helicopter to another hospital for treatment. Her condition is not being released as of the Tuesday print deadline for this week's issue of The Standard.
The accident remains under investigation by the Iowa State Patrol and the Allamakee County Sheriff’s Department. Assisting at the scene were the Lansing Ambulance Service and Lansing Fire Department.

Volunteers needed to make Waukon Corn Days a continued success

Waukon Corn Days is fast approaching and the event is still in need of volunteers of all types. Waukon Corn Days offers a unique opportunity to volunteer within the community. In order for the 2015 Corn Days celebration to run effectively and efficiently, additional volunteers are needed to handle necessary tasks to ensure that the event runs smoothly.

Waukon Corn Days Annual Weekend Celebration scheduled for August 14-16

The Waukon Corn Days Annual Weekend Celebration is scheduled to be held Friday, August 14 through Sunday, August 16 throughout the Waukon community. The 2015 event includes three days and nights of events and activities for the entire family.
Friday night, attendees can enjoy a Sweet Corn Meal and Parade, the Crowning of Corn Days Royalty, a Celebrity Dunk Tank and a Sweet Corn Eating Contest. Saturday's highlights include the Veterans Memorial Hospital 5K Run/Walk, a Craft Show and Farmers’ Market, Kids Games, a Classic Car Show, Bean Bag and Frisbee Golf Tournaments, Toilet Bowl Races and a Street Dance. The final day, Sunday, will feature a Fly-In Breakfast and Airplane Rides, Fire Truck Rides, Paintball, a Petting Farm and Pedal Tractor Races.

Waukon Corn Days Parade seeking entries

As part of the Waukon Corn Days Annual Weekend Celebration, there will be a Corn Days Parade through downtown Waukon at 7 p.m. Friday, August 14. The parade route will be the same as in past years, beginning from the Allamakee County Fairgrounds and heading south down Allamakee Street to the stoplight intersection with Main Street. Turning right on to West Main Street, the parade will venture up to Second Street NW, where the entries will turn right at the Post Office, travel down Second Street NW, and then turn right on Eighth Avenue NW to head back to the fairgrounds.

Iowa State University releases Waukon results following 20-year study of Iowa's small towns

Iowa State University recently released the results of a 20-year study of life in Iowa’s small towns. In 1994, one town was selected from each of Iowa’s 99 counties to participate in a survey regarding various aspects of small-town living, with Waukon being the town selected to represent Allamakee County and 150 surveys distributed. The surveys were sent again in 2004 and a final time in 2014. Those three survey years were then used to identify trends and generate an average in the various categories to use as a baseline for comparison.

Search warrant results in drug charges

Tuesday, June 30 the Waukon Police Department and Allamakee County Sheriff’s Department conducted a search warrant at 13 Lyle Drive in Waukon. The warrant yielded a controlled substance (marijuana) and drug paraphernalia. Dakota Voves, age 24, was arrested and charged with Possession of a Controlled Substance (third or subsequent offense) - Marijuana and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.
The Waukon Police Department was also assisted by the Winneshiek County Sheriff’s Office K-9 unit. The filing of a criminal charge is only an accusation and the accused are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
