March is Athletic Training Month; Local athletic trainer Brad Krambeer covers area schools

Athletic Training at VMH ... March is National Athletic Training Month. Pictured above is Brad Krambeer, Athletic Trainer at Veterans Memorial Hospital, with sports patient Keri Picha of the MFL/Mar Mac School District, who has been working with Krambeer since January following surgery at Gundersen Health for a torn ACL and meniscus. Krambeer provides full coverage in Waukon for all sports and also attends all football games and all home wrestling meets. He travels to Kee High School in Lansing two days per week to provide injury assessment of any type of sports injuries that may have occurred. If a student has an injury that needs to be assessed, the student should contact their coach or school office, who can then contact Krambeer to complete the assessment, which can be performed at the school or at the hospital. Athletic trainers help treat and prevent injuries for people of all ages from athletes to laborers. They specialize in the assessment, treatment and rehabilitation of physical injuries to the muscle, ligament and bone, as well as rehabilitation following surgery. Athletic trainers are also key in teaching injury prevention by explaining flexibility exercises, proper use of equipment and applying prevention devices such as tape, bandages and braces.

Pulmonary Rehabilitation Week: Pulmonary Rehabilitation helps for better function day to day

Pulmonary Rehabilitation at VMH ... Pictured above is pulmonary rehabilitation patient Joan Gisleson of Luana with Amy Rolfs, RN, during a pulmonary rehabilitation session at Veterans Memorial Hospital. Submitted photo.

Pulmonary rehabilitation is a program offered at Veterans Memorial Hospital that teaches a person to live and breathe better with chronic lung disease. Conditions such as emphysema, chronic bronchitis, asthma, restrictive lung disease and cystic fibrosis can make doing every day activities difficult due to shortness of breath and low activity tolerance. Participation in a pulmonary rehab program can help increase strength, manage shortness of breath, decrease anxiety and depression and implement a consistent at-home exercise program.

By Jill Fleming MS, RD/LD
Veterans Memorial Hospital Dietitian

Sure, you can lose weight quickly. There are plenty of fad diets that work to shed pounds fast, leaving you feeling hungry and deprived.  The problem is that most people can only follow these restrictive diets for a short time, eventually going back to their old way of eating. I call this the “diet roller coaster”.

Instead of starting a restrictive diet, which lowers your metabolism, why not adopt a few new choices that can turn into lifelong habits?  The weight you lose with new habits is more likely to be permanent.
