The need for fast, sensitive and specific results for causes of diarrheal illness are extremely important. The new GI Panel Analyzer is very beneficial to that aspect. A GI Panel tests for 22 of the most significant causes of infectious diarrheal illnesses, including bacteria, parasites and viruses. This analyzer tests for these organisms’ DNA, making it extremely sensitive and specific. Plus, with this new machine now in-house, the test only takes a little over an hour.

April is National Occupational Therapy Month: Helpful tips to consider prior to hip or knee replacement surgery

Occupational Therapy Month at VMH... April is National Occupational Therapy Month. Patients who have their surgery performed at Veterans Memorial Hospital can remain in the hospital on skilled care for therapy twice per day. Even those who have their surgery at another facility, like Sharon Snitker of Waukon, pictured above, can request to come back to Veterans Memorial Hospital to stay on skilled care to receive the twice daily treatment for a fuller, speedier recovery. Snitker is pictured with Occupational Therapists Melissa Clark, at left, and Tami Gebel, at right, in one of the Veterans Memorial Hospital patient rooms. Submitted photo.

Have you been experiencing pain in your hip or knee? Are you having difficulty completing daily tasks, such as dressing, bathing, and making a meal? Is it becoming more difficult to walk around your house, through the grocery store, or attend special events where there are stairs?

These are some important questions to consider before talking with your doctor about having a hip or knee replacement surgery. The surgery, and the expected pain and inconvenience, can seem overwhelming; however, the after effects can be life changing. The therapy department at Veterans Memorial Hospital is here to help you through the transition from painful limiting joints to returning to a fulfilling productive life.
