A somewhat depleted Waukon football team riddled by injury from its first Class 2A District 4 loss of the season a week earlier showed little sign of that depletion in dominating a winless Oelwein squad on the road Friday, October 14. Minus their first and second string quarterbacks and most veteran wide receiver, the Indians, instead, ran rampant over the host Huskies and limited Oelwein to just 122 yards of total offense in posting a 48-8 victory, more than half of those Husky yards coming in the fourth quarter of the ballgame.

“We stressed the importance of each player doing his job, pointing out the absence of other players does not impact each individual’s performance,” Waukon football coach Chad Beermann said. “Basically, if I am left tackle, it does not matter who is carrying the ball, I have a job to do.”

A rung on the Class 2A District 4 championship ladder was at stake when two of the District’s three still undefeated teams took to the field at Upper Iowa University in Fayette Friday,

October 7. Even though the fourth-rated Waukon football team was technically the home team for the neutral site, it was the second-rated Union Knights that made themselves feel more at home in handing the gridiron Tribe a 37-16 defeat.

“Union’s size and speed was better than ours,” Waukon football coach Chad Beermann said. “In addition, we tackled poorly. We have also lived off turnovers, and Union recovered their only fumble, though we did have five to six kids in the area.”

The Kee volleyball team battled through its busiest week of the season, playing what amounted to nine total matches in a five-day span. The Hawks split a double dual at Turkey Valley Tuesday, October 4, winning three of four sets to defeat the host school in an Upper Iowa Conference (UIC) match but also falling to New Hampton in two straight sets. The Kee netters then swept a second UIC match from Postville in three straight sets at home Thursday, October 6 before winning five of six matches at the Riceville Tournament Saturday, October 8 to claim at least a share of the tournament title.

The Waukon boys cross country team competed in the South Winneshiek Invitational Tuesday, October 4, scoring its highest team finish of the season. Behind a pair of consecutive finishes within the top 20 individuals, the Indians scored 54 team points to finish second behind Decorah in the six-team scoring field.

The Indians were next scheduled to compete in the Northeast Iowa Conference Meet to be held Tuesday, October 11 at Oelwein. The distance Tribe will then look to extend its season competing at its Class 2A State Qualifying Meet Thursday, October 20 at Monticello, the details of which are printed in a shaded box in the print edition and e-edition of The Standard.

The Waukon girls cross country team wrapped up its regular season of invitational competition at the South Winneshiek Invitational Tuesday, October 4. The meet runs all high school runners in the same race, with no separation between varsity and junior varsity, and the Indians tallied 142 team points to finish fifth in the seven team-scored field.

The Indians were next scheduled to compete in the Northeast Iowa Conference Meet to be held Tuesday, October 11 at Oelwein. The Kee cross country team completed a busy week with a pair of meets within three days of one another. The Hawk boys were able to tally team scores at the varsity level in both the South Winneshiek Invitational Tuesday, October 4 and the New Hampton Invitational Thursday, October 6, with the Hawk girls managing a team score only at the South Winneshiek Invitational.

The Hawks are scheduled to compete in their Upper Iowa Conference Meet to be hosted by Starmont Thursday, October 13. Kee’s distance dandies will then look to extend their season at the Class 1A State Qualifying Meet at Cedar Falls the following Thursday, October 20, beginning at 3 p.m. Additional details of that State Qualifying Meet are printed in a shaded box in the print edition and e-edition of The Standard.

The Waukon football team played to a happy Homecoming Friday, September 30 by rolling over fellow Class 2A District 4 opponent Monticello by a 44-6 final result. In a battle of air vs. ground attacks, the Indian passing game proved to be very little match on the scoreboard for the visiting Panthers’ rushing attack.

Even though the Indians gave up 270 rushing yards in the contest, that one-dimensional Monticello attack did not produce like the Tribe’s air show that resulted in 265 yards and all five of Waukon’s touchdowns. Not only was the Panther offense one dimensional on the ground - Monticello completing just one pass for 21 yards in the contest, but its rushing attack also proved one dimensional within itself, as junior quarterback Max Keleher accounted for 218 of those rushing yards all on his own.

The Kee football team played host to the sleeping giant that had been awakened last week with its first loss ever during the regular season of Eight-Player football, as top 10-rated Don Bosco traveled to Lansing Friday, September 30 after falling to Central Elkader last Friday. The Hawks, however, showed no signs of intimidation in striking the first blow and standing toe-to-toe with the high-powered Dons through much of the first half, trailing by just a 25-20 count midway through the second quarter before Don Bosco rattled off 49 unanswered points to deal the host Hawks a 74-20 defeat.

The Kee cross country team competed in another large meet when the Hawks traveled to Jesup Tuesday, September 27. Competing against nearly two dozen other teams, the Kee cross country girls had just enough runners to compile the Hawks’ only team score at the meet, finishing 14th out of 21 teams, while the Kee boys had just four runners compete in their varsity race and two compete in the junior varsity field.

“Jesup puts together a very good group of schools, there were several highly regarded 1A, 2A and 3A schools in the 29-team field,” Kee cross country coach Pat Wagner said. “Looking at times and placings, I feel like we are in a good spot. All of our runners can shave a little time but our girls match up well with other top-notch area 1A schools. All Hawk runners need to work on our second and third miles. At this point of the season we need to be concerned about continually getting better.”

The Waukon volleyball team played through a winless week, suffering both a single dual match loss before falling to the same fate in three more weekend tournament matches. The Indian netters were swept at home by New Hampton Tuesday, September 27 before winning just one of seven total sets in falling in three matches at the Waterloo Columbus Tournament Saturday, October 1.

Now holding a 7-14-1 overall record, including a 1-3 Northeast Iowa Conference mark, the volleyball Indians were scheduled to travel to Class 4A sixth-rated Charles City Tuesday, October 4 before playing in the Hudson Tournament Saturday, October 8. The Waukon netters will then wrap up their regular season with a Tuesday, October 11 home dual against Decorah before playing in the Northeast Iowa Conference Tournament Saturday, October 15.
