The streets and parking lots around the Lansing City Sports Complex and Anderson Park were filled with cars, people and “oohs” and “aahs” as the Fourth of July fireworks display lit up the nighttime skies Saturday evening, July 4. The display in Lansing was one of several that took place in northeast Iowa and the tri-state area over the weekend in celebration of the birthday of the United States.

Poultry showing at the 162nd Allamakee County Fair coming up next week, July 15-19, will look a little different this year.
In response to an Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship mandate issued in May of this year, all bird exhibitions at county fairs and the Iowa State Fair have been canceled. That action came following an avian influenza (bird flu) outbreak in western Iowa earlier this year.

Thursday, July 2 at 11:01 a.m., the Allamakee County Sheriff’s Department received a report of a one-vehicle accident on State Highway 76 north of Waukon. The accident location was approximately 500 feet north of the State Highway 76 and Iverson Bridge Road intersection. According to a report from the Allamakee County Sheriff's Office, the driver, 18-year-old Christine A. Lund of Spring Grove, MN, lost control of the vehicle she was driving. The vehicle entered the ditch and rolled over multiple times, ejecting the female driver from the vehicle. The driver was pronounced deceased at the scene and was the only occupant of the vehicle. The accident remains under investigation by the Allamakee County Sheriff’s Office. Assisting at the scene was the Waukon Fire Department, Veterans Memorial Hospital Ambulance and Iowa Department of Transportation Enforcement Division.

The annual New Albin Days Past and Present celebration that was held June 12-13 celebrated the community of New Albin in all its past history and present glory with a wide variety of activities. Pictured left to right, Tyson Cota and Alaina Bakewell were crowned Little Mr. New Albin and Little Miss New Albin, respectively, Friday, June 12 in the first time the contest has expanded to include Little Mr. New Albin. Attendees at this year's event were greeted by an invitation to "make yourself at home" by a new billboard sign that could be seen hanging on the side of the former town hall building in New Albin. A pair of Decorah natives are canoeing their way down the length of the Mississippi River in an effort to raise funds for suicide awareness and prevention. Corey Smock and Lance Loney, both 2009 graduates of Decorah High School, embarked upon their "Paddle for Prevention" journey Thursday, June 4 from the Mississippi River headwaters of Lake Itasca in Minnesota, and have plans to paddle into Lansing this Friday, June 26 for a bit of a reprieve from their time on the river.

An upcoming auction will mark the end of an era but should also bring back an abundance of memories for many in the local and surrounding area.
Sunday and Monday, June 28 and 29, the family of the late Ray Sweeney will offer at public auction his extensive House of Clocks Museum collection that includes historical memorabilia from near and far that has drawn local, national and even worldwide attention. The auction is scheduled to begin at 9:30 a.m. both days. “It’s a rare opportunity,” said Sweeney Auction Service.
