Allamakee Community School District Board of Education meeting Jan. 31

Members of the Allamakee Community School District Board of Education met briefly Monday, Jan. 31 in a special session.
The first item of business was to approve an out-of-state trip for the WHS competition cheerleading squad. The team sought approval to attend the Feb. 27 Badger Cheer Competition in Madison, WI. Members of the board ultimately approved the trip, however, there were concerns about a possibly hectic weekend. The team also hopes to compete at a competition at the University of Iowa Feb. 26, but wrestling and girls basketball tournament action could complicate the weekend.
President Tom Baxter noted, "I'm inclined to approve one or the other," with other members also concerned about a great deal of travel in such a small timeframe.
Shelly Hesla was present on behalf of cheer coach Terri Kleinow, who was ill. She explained that the squad normally attends just one of the competitions, however, the team had to skip the Spirit of America contest in Minneapolis earlier this year and wanted to compete at both Madison and Iowa City.
After discussing the cheerleading trip, the board breezed through the remaining trio of items, all dealing with personnel.
Ronda Kent was hired as secondary Family and Consumer Science teacher beginning next year and Shawna Miller was approved as a special education associate.
David Honts was hired as instrumental music instructor for the senior high for the remainder of the school year. Honts began working with the district as a substitute in mid-January.
