Allamakee County 4-H hosts annual Awards Program

The annual Allamakee County 4-H Awards Program was held Sunday, November 3 in conjunction with the 4-H Soup Supper at the Allamakee County Fairgrounds Pavilion in Waukon. The evening program was planned and conducted by members of the 4-H County Council, Youth Development Committee, and ISU Extension and Outreach Allamakee County staff. The Elon PMC and Ludlow Future Farmers 4-H Clubs helped serve at the event.
The program began with the introduction of the Youth Development Committee, 4-H County Council and Clover Kids. The 4-H leaders serving five years and more were recognized.  Teresa Brown, Tina Cooper, Lana Dahlstrom, Amy Hagen, Amy Lage and Joan Weymiller each received a five-year pin, and Marlene Ahouse, Nita Grangaard, Clara Lensing and Barb Melcher each received a 10-year pin.

SPECIAL AWARDS
The Friend of 4-H Award is given to an individual, group or business that has supported 4-H through time, talents and resources.  Monroe Auction Service was named this year’s Friend of 4-H recipient. They have served as auctioneers during the Allamakee County Fair at the Dairy Auction and Livestock Auctions. Mike Monroe and Glen Monroe were in attendance to receive the award.
The Honorary 4-H’er Award is presented to a person or persons who were not an active 4-H member, but understand the importance of the program. This year’s award was presented to Judy Hyman of Postville. She has dedicated her time to support 4-H during the Big 4 Fair as the secretary for many years.
The 4-H Alumni Award is presented to an individual who was a former 4-H member and has given back to the 4-H program. The 4-H Alumni Award was presented to Jack Heffern of Harpers Ferry, who has been an active supporter of 4-H for many years as a member and as a parent. As a youth, he was a member of the Cherry Mound Chargers 4-H Club. Today, he assists at the beef weigh-in, the beef show during the fair, and the livestock auction. He is always willing to give a helping hand, or share a smile or a joke.
Betty Troendle of Waukon received the honor of being Allamakee County’s 2014 Iowa 4-H Hall of Fame Inductee at the 4-H Awards Program. She has been long-time supporter of the Allamakee County 4-H Program. She became a 4-H’er in 1955 as a member of the Sunny Sues 4-H Club in Waterville. Troendle was a 4-H mother, and head assistant to her husband, Tom, who was a leader for the Happy Hustlers and active Fair Board member in the late 1970s and early 1980s.
Troendle became a club leader in the mid-1980s of the 4-H Toppers, and served there until the mid-1990s. She continued serving on the Youth Development Committee for many years and as a Food & Nutrition Judge from 1996-2004.  Today, she continues to volunteer whenever a hand is needed in her grandchildren’s club, at the fruit and butterbraid delivery, or with a 4-H project.
Her hard work, heart of gold and willingness to always help out has influenced many throughout her 4-H career.
