Bakke commits football talents to Winona State University

Like several other high school athletes, Waukon senior Justin Bakke committed to playing college football last Wednesday, Feb. 2. Bakke signed a letter of intent to attend Winona State University, a Division II school.
Bakke, son of Michelle Bakke and Dave Bakke, wrapped up a fine high school career with the Indians this past fall. During his varsity career, he had 98 tackles. He led the Tribe with nine pass breakups his senior season. During his junior season, he had four interceptions.
The 5'10, 180-pound senior also contributed on the offensive side of the ball as one of the Indians' top rushers and returners in 2004.
A two-time all-district defensive choice, Bakke's abilities were sought by two more Division II schools, Upper Iowa and Bemidji State, as well as virtually every school in the Division III Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.
"Winona State is a good school and I liked the game atmosphere," Bakke said to explain his choice. "I really liked the coaches and players and felt like I'll fit in well." He plans on majoring in criminology.
Bakke will be the second Waukon football player to commit to Winona State in the past two years. 2004 graduate Shawn Cunningham also competes as a member of the Warrior defense.
Waukon head football coach Tom Oppelt is proud of Bakke and thinks he'll do well at the next level. "Justin is successful because of his great work ethic. Athletically, he's got the ability to change direction quickly and he just has a great sense for the game of football."
His top talent on defense might be his ability to read a situation. "Justin has the ability to read quarterbacks' eyes and break for the ball."
Oppelt added, "This is a well-deserved honor and a great way to celebrate the work he's put in through the years. I'm proud of him and I know all his coaches and teammates wish him well."
Winona State head coach Tom Sawyer was unavailable for comment.

The Warriors have won two consecutive Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference titles and four in the past five years. They made their second straight trip to the Division II playoffs in 2004.
