by Bob Beach

During its regular meeting Monday, August 20, the Allamakee County Board of Supervisors met with County Engineer Brian Ridenour for the opening of bids for a bridge deck replacement on Mineral Creek Drive and for LP gas for several county departments.
Brennan Construction of Lansing submitted the low bid of $97,414.00 for the bridge deck replacement on Mineral Creek Drive. Ridenour said that the bid was very close to his own estimate of $95,846.10. Also bidding on the project were Iowa Bridge and Culvert of Washington ($114,488.80) and K Construction of Elkader ($133,979.46). Ridenour said he would review the bids and make a recommendation to the Board next week.
Fauser Energy Resources of Elgin submitted the low bid of $1.079 per gallon for 16,200 gallons of LP gas for the Secondary Roads, Conservation and Solid Waste departments. Also bidding were Postville Farmers Coop ($1.12 per gallon), Waukon Feed Ranch ($1.12 per gallon), Welch Inc. ($1.15 per gallon) and AgVantage FS ($1.229 per gallon). The Board voted to accept the low bid from Fauser.
Under personnel matters, the Board voted to approve hiring Wayne Stone as a Solid Waste employee to work five hours Saturday mornings at $11.00 per hour. The Board also accepted the resignation of Cynthia Reinke from her position as a dispatcher for the Sheriff’s Department and approved hiring Reed Kious as a Sheriff’s Department Deputy starting October 1.
In other business, the Board approved a partial property tax abatement for Mary Schulte of Waukon, whose property lines were corrected after a recent survey showed that the front property line was in the center of the street, rather than at the curb; the portion of the lot that is now in the street is not subject to property tax. The Board also approved a non-discrimination agreement with the Iowa Department of Transportation.
