City of Waukon adopts snow removal policy

The Waukon City Council passed a resolution at its Monday, Feb. 7 regular meeting to establish a policy on snow removal from public sidewalks within the city limits. Effective immediately, the resolution reads as follows:
The owners of property abutting on public sidewalks in the City of Waukon are required by state and city law to remove snow and ice from the public sidewalks. Liability for injuries occurring on uncleared public sidewalks is placed on the abutting property owner. The Waukon Street Superintendent has been directed to take action to clear public sidewalks which have not been cleared by the abutting property owner within 24 hours following the conclusion of a snow or ice storm. If it becomes necessary for the city to clear any sidewalks the property owner will be assessed at the rate of $75 per hour for the first hour and $50 per hour for each additional hour, with such charges being added to property taxes in not promptly paid.
